We teach him often that every human being has the power to control their dreams and destinies and that there is no part or circumstance that need keep them from those things. This was a fabulous storyline to experience with my son. She never cowered in fear of what could or couldn’t be, she just did. The best part, to me, was that she never backed down. She doesn’t wait around for permission or approval. She takes things into her own hands, including the oar, to make her own journey come to life. She stays ever-curious about the unknown. Throughout the movie she continuously impresses us with her determination to explore beyond what she knows. You’re quick to find that she’s no princess or damsel in distress. The strength of Moana’s ( Auli’i Cravalho) character is refreshing. I can’t quite explain what it is, but it must have been the simplicity and silliness. Every one of his scenes had me in complete stitches. The writers really embodied the slapstick comedy element with him. Perhaps it’s because I relate so well to his derpy, tomfoolery. Hei Hei may be one of my favorite characters in the whole film. Prepare to fall in love with the rooster.

I dare you to tell me you don’t get sheeting chills when you see that castle. It is such an homage to the Polynesian culture. From the track, “You’re Welcome”, as performed by Maui ( Dwayne Johnson), to the hilarious “Shiny” performed by Tamatoa ( Jemaine Clement), there’s certainly no lack of entertainment. I suppose when you have the greatness that is Lin-Manuel Miranda and Opetaia Foa’i behind the soundtrack, you’re bound to hear something phenomenal. The physical attributes of the characters spoke well to the people. There was the perfect mix of the darkness in many of the stories as well as the whimsy and otherworldly details. Disney did a fantastic job capturing the lore and adapting it to a family-friendly audience. Having grown up around a flourishing Pacific Islander community, the translation of the culture’s storytelling was beyond compare. The perfect nod to the Pacific Islander culture.
